Ask anyone who's spent a night wrestling their way out of a twisted mummy bag and they'll tell you not everyone sleeps flat on their back like a soldier at attention. Quilts are made for the side sleepers, the knee-huggers and the restless turners, with an open-backed design that drapes over you like the duvet at home. This gives you the freedom to shift about without dragging the whole bag round with you. The thinking is clever too: the insulation you lie on gets squashed flat anyway, so a quilt leaves it out and lets your sleeping mat handle the warmth from below. Grab a cosy pillow and you have a setup that would rival your bed at home.
